Firearm: Howa 1500
The standard bullet weight for this caliber is 130 grains. I might go with the 130 gr. Sierra GameKing. Sierra does make a 140 gr. HPBT GameKing, but that is excessive for deer.
Warning: I've been hearing about this caliber being particularly susceptible to bullets blowing up. I need to be sure that whatever bullet I select will hold up to the velocities. Otherwise, I may need to look at a bullet like the Partition or the TSX.
Update: Two new products have been introduced that I think deserve to be brought together: Sierra GameChanger bullets, aka Tipped GameKing (TGK), and Winchester StaBALL 6.5 powder. I need to combine these and do my next round of experimentation with them.

A basic deer-hunting load. I plan to use the 130 grain Sierra GameKing, #1820.
H1000, H4831, H4350, Varget, H4895, and IMR 8208 XBR are all options with approximately the same velocity. I think I would like to start with H4831 for a change. |
