.300 Remington Ultra Magnum
The justification for this rifle (my Remington 700 Sendero SF II) is hunting at longer ranges (what my gunsmith would refer to as medium range). Ballistic calculators show that some of these bullets can retain 1500 ft-lbs of energy (for deer) out to 800 or 850 yards, and 2000 ft-lbs of energy (for elk) out to 550 or 600 yards. However, it remains to be seen whether I can develop loads accurate enough to be used at those distances.

A long-range hunting load good for 650 to 850 yards using a hunting bullet designed to expand at low velocities.

Hornady 212 gr. ELD-X: This reaches the lands at a COAL of 3.865", but I need a COAL of 3.600" to fit in the magazine. That means these bullets will be .265" away from the lands. I may need to experiment with single feeding these.
